Julie Shay - The Future Coder: From Code Assignment to Clinical Intelligence

Presentation Summary - One code is never just one code.

Every diagnosis, procedure, and documentation decision creates a ripple effect that extends throughout the healthcare system, impacting reimbursement, CDI, quality reporting, compliance, auditing, risk adjustment, analytics, artificial intelligence, and ultimately patient care.

As healthcare embraces AI, automation, and data-driven decision-making, the role of the coding professional is evolving beyond code assignment to clinical intelligence.

This engaging session explores how today's coders, CDI specialists, auditors, and more create organizational value by transforming clinical documentation into trusted data that drives strategic decisions across the healthcare enterprise.

Through real-world case studies and interactive discussion, participants will discover why every coding decision matters, how their expertise influences the success of the entire revenue cycle, and the essential role they play in shaping the future of healthcare.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven healthcare are transforming the role of coding professionals.

2. Explain how a single documentation or coding decision creates a ripple effect across the healthcare ecosystem.

3. Differentiate between traditional code assignment and the expanding role of clinical intelligence in healthcare.

4. Recognize and articulate the strategic value coding professionals bring to an organization.

5. Identify the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to remain a trusted health information professional in an AI-enabled healthcare environment.

Emily Schmidt – Compliance

Presentation Summary – What does an effective compliance program actually look like in practice? The OIG's seven elements provide the framework, but knowing the framework isn't enough. This session takes attendees beyond the checklist to explore how policies, education, communication, auditing, accountability, and corrective action work together to prevent and identify compliance risk. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of their role in the compliance process—and practical ways to apply these concepts within their own organizations.

Speaker Bio - Hey there! I'm Emily Schmidt, and I love coding. I currently work full time as the Program Manager of the Coder/Biller Program at Daytona State College and as a part time Risk Management Lead at CenterWell Senior Primary Care (a division of Humana).

Throughout my career, I've previously held roles as a coder, coding supervisor, coder/physician educator, and leader of internal coding and documentation audit teams. I specialize in risk adjustment and office/outpatient E&M coding, and am passionate about elevating coding standards and making coding compliance both understandable and engaging.

I hold a Juris Master in Healthcare Regulation from Florida State University, a Master of Science in Health Informatics Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: Healthcare Management from Liberty University. Sarah Ragan - Coding the Crisis: Opioid Use, Abuse, and Dependence in Medical Coding

Presentation Summary  - Seven years ago, I lost my daughter Madeline to an opioid overdose. She was brave, brilliant, and she knew she wouldn’t survive. Before she died, she asked me to tell her story, and I promised her I would. Today, I’m here not just as a certified coder, but as a mother who understands the urgency behind every diagnosis code. This presentation is for her and for every family navigating this crisis. My goal is to help you code these conditions with accuracy, integrity, and compassion. The data we capture can shape care, funding, and lives.

Presentation Bio - Sarah Ragan, COC, CPC, CPMA, CRC, CEMC, CFPC, AAPC Approved Instructor, has been a certified medical coder since 2014 and a passionate advocate for career development in healthcare. She has served as secretary, vice president, and president of the Daytona Beach, FL AAPC chapter, and has presented at AAPC Regional Conferences in Charleston (2021) and Philadelphia (2024), sharing insights on coding, compliance, and professional growth.

In 2022, Sarah founded Caffeinated Career Creations, a résumé and career consulting business that blends technical expertise with storytelling flair. She specializes in helping new CPC-As and transitioning professionals craft résumés that reflect their strengths, goals, and unique journeys.

When she’s not decoding documentation or empowering job seekers, Sarah can be found soaking up the Florida sun, sipping strong coffee, and hanging out with her dogs—who are arguably her most loyal (and least critical) audience.

Christina Harris – ICD 11 – The Future of Medical Coding

Presentation Summary: This presentation takes participants inside the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11), and explores what it means for the future of medical coding. It explains why the World Health Organization (WHO) created ICD-11, highlights its most important innovations, and shows how it differs from ICD-10-CM. Topics include ICD-11’s digital-first design, enhanced clinical specificity, cluster coding or post-coordination, extension codes, and stronger interoperability with electronic health records. Participants will see how ICD-11 can improve clinical documentation, quality reporting, public health surveillance, research, and healthcare analytics. The session also examines what this shift may mean for medical coders, providers, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists, risk adjustment professionals, and healthcare organizations preparing for the next evolution in coding.

To bring the concepts to life, the presentation features ten real-world coding scenarios that demonstrate ICD-11 principles, including single stem codes and cluster coding examples. These interactive exercises give participants a practical way to apply ICD-11 concepts and build confidence with the new classification system.

The presentation closes with an update on ICD-11 implementation, noting that the United States continues to use ICD-10-CM for diagnosis coding and has not announced a national ICD-11 implementation date. Participants will leave with a clear foundation in ICD-11, a stronger understanding of its benefits and challenges, and practical steps they can take now to prepare through continued education and improved clinical documentation practices.
